We know HR can feel like a mysterious land full of policies, paperwork, and the occasional “wait… can we actually do that?” moment. That’s why here at AMIAS HR we pulled together this list of some common questions, so you don’t have to wander the wonderful world of HR alone. Think of it as our cheat sheet to help keep you from googling things at 2 am. If your burning HR question isn’t covered here (and let’s face it, HR can spark a lot of them), reach out to us. We love talking shop, answering the HR curveballs, drinking coffee, dealing with those lovely HR oh sh!t moments and making HR just a little less scary and a whole lot more awesome and fun. Oh, if only it were that glamorous. If human resources was just hiring and firing, we’d all have more time for some spa days. The truth? We’re compliance ninjas, paperwork whisperers, culture 


architects, and sometimes even therapists (minus the couch, plus the coffee). We keep you from getting sued, fined, or turning into an episode of Dateline.

Fun fact: small businesses need HR more than anyone. Why? Because one bad termination, one OSHA or Form I9 violation, or one employee who “forgets” to clock in for three weeks straight can take you down faster than you can say “LLC.” We keep you compliant, put out fires before they start, and give you room to grow without worrying about whether your handbook came from 1998. 


The “big dogs” or large organizations have the budget for in-house HR, you’ve got us. You don’t need full-time HR. That is why AMIAS HR was started. You and your business can do as little or as much HR as you need.


You can! And you can also Google “home surgery” … but do you really want to? Forms are just paper. HR is about people, compliance, and knowing how and when to use those papers correctly ... plus those fancy words on the forms matter. We customize your policies to fit your industry, your state, and your actual business. Not all businesses are the same and nothing screams “lawsuit incoming” like handing an employee a random template you downloaded at 2 am with a coffee stain on it.


Contrary to popular belief, we’re not workplace tattletales. HR is more like Vegas Baby: what’s said here, stays here – unless it’s dangerous, illegal, unethical or involves a raccoon in the breakroom (and yes, that’s happened). Our job is to be approachable and trustworthy, while still protecting the business. It's a balancing act. Being nice doesn’t mean we won’t bring the hammer when it’s needed. We’re equal parts therapist, referee, and rule enforcer. We have seen some stuff. 


The HR book Michelle is going to write will eventually get done and as we say … you just can’t make this sh!t up. I mean come on … snitches get stiches. It's a proven fact.


Yes. For the love of payroll people, yes. Ten employees can generate more drama than a reality TV show. We know! As The Payroll Turns makes for some fun drama, but is that how a business should operate? HR helps you before things explode. We’re the difference between “Hey, let’s fix this,” “hold my beer” and “why are we in court right now?” The smaller the business, the bigger the impact of even one mistake. Trust us: it’s cheaper to have us in your corner than to gamble on “we’ll wing it.” Ignorance is NOT a legal defense.


Nah. We don’t cancel the fun; we just make sure it doesn’t end with HR forms, the police being called, attorney bills, and someone crying in the bathroom. If anything we may even make it a little bit 'funner.' Think of us as the referees. We keep the dodgeball game safe, fair, and lawsuit-free. Want a holiday party? Great! We’ll just gently recommend no mistletoe, no tequila fountains, and maybe no photocopier “art projects.” 


Oh, and we obviously have to be invited. Duh. We didn't say we couldn't do shots. Again, just no Little Caesars Pizza ... ever. Not. Ever.


Let’s be real – HR has a reputation problem. A lot of people think HR is just the “happiness hall monitor,” sitting in some corner office or a basement, waiting to write people up for having too much personality at the weekly happy hour. Or worse, HR only shows up when someone’s about to get fired. No wonder people roll their eyes. There are quite a few horrible HR people out there and they give the rest of us awesome ones a bad name.


In a lot of companies, HR feels like the department of No.

  • “No, you can’t have that day off. We don’t have a reason why; we just want to say no.”
  • “No, we don’t know when payroll will be fixed. I don’t care if it’s a law.”
  • “No, we don’t have time to listen to why your boss thinks emojis in emails are unprofessional.”


It’s no surprise people groan when HR walks into the room. We do too. AMIAS HR flips the script. We’re the team that says:

(because "free lawsuits" aren't actually a thing)

Absolutely. HR saves you money the way a seatbelt saves your face in a crash. We reduce turnover, stop compliance fines before they land, and keep your payroll from turning into a full-blown crime scene. An average, single infraction on a Form I9 error is over $2,700 or an OSHA fine alone can cost at minimum $15,000 (and that’s on the low side) … that’s more than a year of partnering with us.
